New York Yankees team captain and shortstop Derek Jeter has been named the 2009 Sports Illustrated Sportsman of the Year.
The MLB player is the first Yankee to receive the award, which is presented each year to one who has "excelled in athletic performance and demonstrated great character."
"Over all the years SI editors have used the same language to define the award," Sports Illustrated Group Editor Terry McDonell said in a press release. "It is not for the victory alone that he (or she) is honored; rather, it is for the quality of his effort and the manner of his striving.' And that defines Derek Jeter."
Lance Armstrong, Michael Jordan and Tiger Woods have also received the honor in previous years. The 2009 SI Sportsman of the Year issue hits newsstands on Wednesday, December 2.
