With the economy hurting, many families facing serious money problems are forced to leave their beloved pets at animal shelters across the country. Sadly, hundreds of thousands cats and dogs have been given away and according to the U.S. Humane Society, nearly half of those animals will be euthanized because there simply just isn't enough room.

To help solve this heartbreaking problem, Nickelodeon will air 'Kids to the Rescue! Helping Homeless Animals' on December 27 at 8PM. Real kids and celebrities will share their personal stories of saving animals from shelters and falling head-over-paws for their new furry friends.

Sophia Bush is one of the many celebs who will be featured on the show. She rescued her two pups, Patch and Penny, and says "I have had Patch since I shot a film in New Orleans...we just totally fell in love with each other." Click here to see Patch (named because he's missing one of his eyes) and Sophia together!

New Moon's Kellan Lutz is a huge animal lover who will also share his story of adopting two dogs, Kola and Kevin. You can check out video here of Kola wearing a bandana that a fan made!
