Tim Burton is rumored to be taking on Disney's Sleeping Beauty, but as a retelling from the Mistress of All Evil's point of view. The project is said to simply be called Maleficent (you know, after Disney's wicked fairy godmother character), but the director has yet to confirm whether he's really going for it. We think it's a strong possibility. Here's why:
Tim Burton has found a niche in the retelling and film adaptations of classic tales. He has put his fantasy-filled twist on stories like James and the Giant Peach, Sleepy Hollow, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, and most recently with the forthcoming film Alice in Wonderland. Instead of portraying the stories as they've been told before, Tim paints a vivid picture through special effects and color scheme, and adds a sense of humor and a whole lot of unforgettable action for a winning combination.
If the widely respected director were to take on Sleeping Beauty through the eyes of Maleficent, there's no doubt he'd do a great job, given his history with story adaptations. The movie would also be a great project for Tim's longtime collaborators Helena Bonham Carter (she'd be awesome as Malefficent) and Johnny Depp (can you say Prince Phillip?). Fingers crossed...
