As we previously reported, The Last Song, which opens in theaters on March 31, was written with Miley Cyrus in mind. But as author and screenwriter Nicholas Sparks says, "The finished product is definitely not a Hannah Montana movie. It's an ensemble piece with a talented cast that will appeal to audiences of all ages."
Most of this is due to Miley, who plays Veronica "Ronnie" Miller, a talented pianist, who gives up the instrument after her parents get divorced. "When her parents separated, she made some bad choices," Miley says of her character. "But she starts to find her way to being a happier person through faith and love and friendship. Those are the most important ingredients to happiness and they are things in life that we sometimes overlook."
As a musician in her own right, playing the role of Ronnie struck a major chord with Miley. "I love music and I love entertaining," she says. "It makes me so sad to think of not doing this. So it makes me sad that someone with the talent that Ronnie has would deliberately cut herself off from it. Living without music in my life would be like having no air to breathe, and for Ronnie, it's much the same thing. She gives it up to prove a point to her dad and, really, she's just cheating herself."
The17-year-old singer/actress also got an extra perk out of taking on the film. She got to learn how to play piano for the role! "The learning experiences are a part of my job I really love," she says. "So many people dream of learning something like this and I'm getting this experience along with making a movie."
