Stephenie Meyer brings Bree into the Twilight saga in Eclipse. She's one of the newborns created by Victoria as part of her army to bring down the Cullens. Carlisle feels sorry for Bree and instead of destroying her like the other newborns, he gives Bree the option to surrender. Jane and Felix, on the other hand, have another plan in mind and destroy her...hence "the short" part of the novella's title.

Stephenie explains, "I started writing from Bree's perspective about those final days, and what it was like to be a newborn. This story was something that I worked on off and on for a while, just for fun, in between the times I was writing or editing other Twilight novels...Her story is a nice complement to Eclipse; it explains a lot of the things that Bella never knew."
Stephenie also says that she agreed to release Bree's story as its own so "people would get to know Bree before they saw her in the film."
