Metric Track Is Chosen as 'Eclipse' Theme Song
When we revealed the official tracklisting for the Eclipse soundtrack, we saw that Metric's 'Eclipse (All Yours)' would be the opening track of the forthcoming album. Well, according to Spinner, Metric's original composition isn't just the first song, it's also the theme song for the entire film.
"It was one of the most interesting experiences of my musical life so far," singer Emily Haines tells Spinner about collaborating with Oscar-winning composer Howard Shore. "He handpicked us to write a song with him for the last scene of the film."
Emily explains that Howard's score was written to build up to the final scene, and the band was challenged with the task of expressing "euphoria" in their composition. Although Metric's songs have been featured in other films, this is the first time the Canadian rock band has penned a song specifically for a movie.
Emily got to know Kristen Stewart's character Bella so that she could write 'Eclipse (All Yours),' but she admits she didn't get too caught up in Stephenie Meyer's book series.
"I've looked at certain aspects of them but was actually advised against going too far into trying to pander to what's already there," she says. "I have a lot of respect for Stephenie, and I know she's happy about the song which is important to me, but you don't sit down and [write about] vampires and werewolves. These things are metaphors -- and Howard chose us to be us, but express her. So it was a usually and cool challenge."
