On April 12, KFC brought back its Double Down sandwich for a limited time. However, after making its 10 millionth sale later this month, the bunless menu item will be a permanent addition to the KFC menu, at least through the summer.
According to the fast food chain, the sandwich was only going to be available until May 23, but due to popular demand, the Double Down is here to stay. Last year, KFC only placed the sandwich in two test markets. Since then, the Double Down inspired online campaigns and fan buzz, which led the company to launch the item for a five-week period nationwide.
"Our plans were to feature the product only through May 23, but millions of Double Down fans have spoken and we won't disappoint them," Javier Benito, executive vice president of marketing and food innovation for KFC, said in a press release. "You'll continue to be able to get the Double Down at KFC this summer."
The Double Down features two boneless chicken filets, two pieces of bacon, two slices of cheese and the Colonel's Sauce. The fried version of the Double Down has 540 calories, while the grilled alternative clocks in at 460 calories. Although nearly 60 percent of our readers said they thought the sandwich looked gross, 10 million people seem to disagree.
