Teens Use Text Messaging to Find Prom Dates. Smart or Lame?
Lauren, a junior from Newport Beach, CA, had an elaborate plan to ask her boyfriend to prom that included a special day at the barn where she rides horses. But since they both have busy schedules and go to different schools, texting "Will you go to prom with me??!! :) :)" was a better option. It only took two minutes for her date to respond "Yes, of course, I'd love to babe! :)"
"This is basically how we all stay in touch and communicate," Lauren explains to JSYK about the benefits of finding a date over text. "We love to text, and in my case it just made sense, especially since my boyfriend and I go to different schools. We're so busy and my original plan was kind of tricky to pull off."
Lauren still plans to ask her boyfriend to prom in a more memorable setting, but she also knows other teens who used texting as a stress-free way to find a date. In fact, research done by the creator of textPlus (an app that lets you text as much as you want for free), finds that 40% of teens would consider asking their date to prom over text.
