Abby Sunderland has been attempting to become the youngest person to sail around the world alone, but now KTLA reports that the 16-year-old is missing at sea.
Abby sailed into a storm on the Indian Ocean on Thursday when she lost contact with her family, her brother said. One hour later, she reportedly set off her emergency beacon locating devices, but the nearest boat in the area is at least 40 hours away. A search and rescue operation has begun.
On Monday, Abby reached the halfway point of her journey, which was delayed because of a stop in Cape Town, South Africa for boat repairs. "It would be foolish and irresponsible for me to keep going with my equipment not working well," she wrote on her blog.
Abby left for her around-the-world excursion on January 23 and originally planned to be at sea for nearly six months. She hopes to beat 16-year-old Australian sailor Jessica Watson, who is five months older than Abby, for the record. We hope rescuers will be able to find Abby soon, and that she's safe and sound.
