You're hearing it here first: Lea Michele will make her movie debut as the lead in Dorothy of Oz.
Lea will star as Dorothy Gale and lend her voice to many of the film's original songs. Notably missing from the casting announcement is fellow Broadway leading lady Kristin Chenoweth. It was rumored that the former Glee guest-star would play China Doll Princess, a new friend of Dorothy's. Instead, Megan Hilty, who also starred as Glinda in Wicked like Kristin, has been assigned the part.
The flick will be a spin-off of writings about Dorothy's adventures by Roger S. Baum, great-grandson of L. Frank Baum, who originally wrote The Wonderful Wizard of Oz. This new big-screen adaptation will be animated and 3-D. A release date is not confirmed yet, however production will wrap in late 2011.
Summertime Entertainment, who will produce the film, says, "[We] are delighted to have this ideal opportunity to bring the Oz brand forward into the 21st century."
