On Tuesday, April 20, BP's Deepwater Horizon drilling rig suffered an explosion in the Gulf of Mexico. The rig eventually sunk into the water and caused an undersea well to blow out.

Two major leaks were detected and, according to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, have released an estimated 210,000 gallons of oil per day into the ocean.

No one knows exactly how much oil has been leaked, and numbers vary across the board, but what we do know that this is now considered the worst oil spill in U.S. history. Since the discovery of the leak, BP has tried to shut down the well, and, according to ABC, a containment cap over the gusher is sucking up one-third to three-quarters of the oil.

However, with so much oil already in the ocean, the damage has already been done -- and it's still ongoing. Shocking images of oil-slicked pelicans and struggling marine life have brought the severity of the spill home. The oil has damaged hundreds of miles of beaches and wetlands along the Gulf coast, and experts say that currents could carry the oil through the Atlantic Ocean, affecting the East Coast.

From clean-up campaigns to fundraising events, many people are coming up with ways to help remedy the effects of the oil spill. In fact, 11-year-old Olivia Bouler has started her own crusade against the environmental disaster using art. What do you think about BP oil spill? What should be done to stop the gusher and help clean up the mess it's made?
