Afshan Azad's career seemed like a fairytale. She landed the role of Padma Patil, Harry Potter's classmate in the world famous boy wizard franchise, simply by going along for fun with friends to an audition. Since then, she's appeared in four movies and is also part of the Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows cast.

But sadly, things at home are not looking so positive for Afshan. Her father and brother have been arrested for claims they threatened to kill her, and her sibling is also facing assault charges. Afshan's family is reportedly angered because they are Muslim and she's been having a relationship with a Hindu guy.

Her brother Ashraf's laywer now says the actress tried to take back her statement to authorities. "She has never wanted her father and brother to be locked up...My client and his father have already denied the charges and will maintain that plea," he states.
If Afshan did contact police to drop the charges, it could have been because she was fearful of what would happen next. This sad situation is a reminder of how important acceptance is and that threatening or attacking someone because you disapprove of their lifestyle is never, ever acceptable.

The issue of family abuse is a serious one. If you or someone you know needs someone to talk to, here is a list of helpful phone numbers and free hotlines you can call.
