Teens Try to Score Lady Gaga's Look With Illegal Eye Contacts
An Asian company is manufacturing eye contacts called circle lenses, which make eyes appear larger because they not only cover the irises, but part of the whites, too. But according to CNN, the lenses are illegal in the United States. Still, teens are using the Internet to purchase the contacts.
"I've noticed a lot of girls in my town have started to wear them a lot," Melody Vue, a 16-year-old in Morganton, N.C. tells the New York Times. She owns 22 pairs of the lenses, which come in various colors, and says she wears them regularly.
Besides the fact that the contacts are illegal, they can also pose health risks. According to the American Optometric Association, people who wear the lenses without a prescription could be in danger of "serious bacterial infection, or even significant damage to the eye's ability to function, with the potential for irreversible sight loss." Yikes!
