Is 'Teen Mom' Glamourizing Getting Preggers?
Magazine covers, starring on a TV show, becoming famous...are shows like Teen Mom,16 and Pregnant, and The Secret Life of the American Teenager leaving the impression that having a baby in high school makes your life more glamorous?
Seventeen magazine recently polled teen girls for a survey and the results are alarming. Sixty percent of teen girls admit that they've had a pregnancy scare, while 67.5 percent say they've had sex without a condom.
That's risky behavior that could lead to very serious consequences. (Not just pregnancy -- you could also get an STI!) Girls already know this basic sex-ed information, so what's pushing them away from practicing safe sex? Could it be because there's now a celebrity spotlight glittering on pregnant teen girls, so the consequences don't seem so bad?
Or is there a bigger problem than just what's on TV? A massive 77 percent of teen girls reported they get their sex advice from friends. Not a parent, doctor, counselor, etc. When 47 percent of teen girls say they've felt pressure to have sex, it's time to start opening the doors of communication between parents and teens.
