Will Miley Cyrus Be Okay After Her Parents Get Divorced?
Miley Cyrus' parents, Billy Ray and Tish Cyrus, filed for divorce this week. The couple were together for 17 years and cited irreconcilable differences as the reason for their split. But what does this mean for Miley?
"Divorce is always hard on children, no matter what their age," says psychotherapist Lucy Barish, LCSW. "People often think, the younger, the better. However, this is not always true."
Billy Ray and Tish will have to decide who gets custody of their underage children: Miley, 17, Braison, 16, and Noah, 10 -- although Miley turns 18 next month. The Cyrus family also includes three other children from previous relationships. This will undoubtedly be a difficult time for everyone involved, but we're wondering how Miley will cope with the change.
"I think the most important ingredient in how children handle divorce, has to do with how parents handle it," Lucy adds. "If there is animosity, it splits children between the parents, having to make choices about which parent to side with. However, if parents have their children's best interest at heart, they will act cooperative and civilized. So hopefully, Billy Ray Cyrus and Tish Cyrus, whatever their feelings, will act in the best interest of their kids."
