Teen Sentenced to 20 Months in Jail for Drunkenly Stealing and Killing a Baby Alpaca
Nicholas Reynolds, an 18-year-old boy from Ohio, has been sentenced to 20 months in jail for charges stemming from killing a baby alpaca last winter. Nicholas told the judge he was sorry, but he also said he did it because the animal was suffering as a result of Nicholas and two others stealing the animal.
After a night of drinking, Nicholas, Marcus Miller, 18, and Stacie Miller, 22, stole the three-month-old alpaca named Masterpiece from a farm owned by Jeff Pergram. Supposedly Stacie struck the animal with a stick and the three put the animal into the back of a truck. Nick later hit the baby alpaca and Masterpiece ultimately died.
"I thought I was doing the right thing because the animal was suffering," Nicholas told Judge Keith Spaeth.
"I want to apologize to Mr. Pergram for my actions," he also said.
Mr. Pergram, the farm's owner, isn't holding a grudge -- although he has stopped raising alpacas since the incident occurred.
"I am not here to chastise Nick," Jeff Pergram told the judge. "I have a ton of compassion. I had four boys. You need to think before you react. God forgive you for what you have done."
Nick must also complete 100 hours of community service at an animal shelter and pay Mr. Pergram $8,000 for stealing his animal. Is that fair? What do you think about this story? Is the issue of animal rights something that's important to you?
