Is Your Drinking Water Safe? Harmful Chemical Found in 31 Cities' H20

Yikes! The Environmental Working Group reports that water in 31 cities across America is contaminated with a dangerous carcinogen called Chromium-6, which was the same cancer-causing chemical Erin Brockovich found in a California community's drinking water.

The pollutant is known to cause stomach cancer, yet utilities are not required to test specifically for Chromium-6. But that could change in 2011.

The Environmental Protection Agency says, "In order to protect people's health, EPA has had drinking water standards for total chromium, which includes Chromium-6. When this scientific assessment is finalized in 2011, EPA will carefully review the conclusions and consider all relevant information, including the Environmental Working Group's study, to determine if a new standard needs to be set."

Lead author Rebecca Sutton says bottled water isn't necessarily a safe alternative, and instead you should use a water filter.

"It's a step you can take yourself; you don't have to wait for government action," she stated. Keep reading for the U.S. cities affected by this.
