100-Year-Old Time San Francisco School Time Capsule Opened
In December we told you about a school in San Francisco that -- by total chance -- found out the city's mayor put a time capsule in the building's cornerstone 100 years ago.
One JSYK reader said, "That would be so cool! I'd love to see what it was like for teenagers that far in the past. It'll be cool to see what's inside." KATAM97 wrote, "tht is pretty amazing! i would love to have a time capsule when i graduate and then look back on it when im like 50 ;) lol tht would be interesting."
The content of the time capsule at Cleveland Elementary School is no longer a mystery. The box was opened a few days ago as students eagerly looked on. Inside the box was several documents, including one that showed teachers' salaries at the time as well as the 1909 California school law.
There was even a letter to a future mayor of San Francisco. Part of it read: "The city of San Francisco has just about recovered from the effects of the great earthquake and fire of 1906 and is now on a fair way to gretaer prosperity than ever." Oops, the letter included a century-old typo, too.
