Teen Sells Kidney to Buy iPad 2
We know what it's like to want the latest gadgets, but a high school student in China took things to a whole new level when he sold one of his kidneys to buy an iPad 2.
"I wanted to buy an iPad 2 but could not afford it," said the 17-year-old boy, who was only identified as Zheng. "A broker contacted me on the Internet and said he could help me sell one kidney for 20,000 yuan."
Without telling his family, the Huaishan City teen went to a hospital in the city of Chenzhou to undergo the operation, the newspaper said. In U.S. dollars, the boy earned about $3,400 for the organ.
When he came home with an iPad 2, his mom got suspicious and found out that her son had his right kidney removed at Chenzhou No. 198 Hospital. She immediately filed a report with the police.
On top of all this, the teen is reportedly not recovering well, and the hospital where he had the surgery is allegedly not qualified to perform this kind of surgery. Authorities are still investigating the incident.
