It might be an understatement to say that Gavin DeGraw has had it rough these past few weeks. It has only been fifteen days since he was walking home and attacked by a group of men and then struck by a taxi in New York City. It left him with eye, nose, and cheek fractures and a concussion. After being in the hospital, Gavin returned home and had to cancel TV appearances and shows on his current tour with Maroon 5 and Train.
Wednesday night he returned to the stage in Columbia, Md. and I was lucky enough to be there. I'm not going to lie, I was unsure how he was going to be at this show and again, like always, the man blew me away.
I couldn't help but think he'd come out a little slow and ran down, figured he'd most likely have sunglasses on too (hiding his battle wounds), of course his signature hat and mighty cuteness as well. I was also worried his voice wouldn't be that great considering his nose was messed up in the attack. For the most part I was right, he was rocking the shades, hat, and cuteness, but definitely wasn't slow or messed up from his little incident.
As for the way he sounded, well he opened the show with, "In Love With A Girl," and sounded killer. He sounded exactly the same as always. The majority of his set was full of new tunes from his upcoming album 'Sweeter,' which is to be released on September 20th. He also threw in some older songs like "Follow Through" and "Chariot" too. A little into the performance, he took his sunglasses off and the cameras zoomed in on him. I couldn't help but try to see if there was anything noticeable on his face, and thankfully I didn't notice any bruises or cuts at all. Being the funny guy like always, he joked about "having a rough night" a few weeks ago and said that it feels good to be back.
Seeing him pre-attack in concert before, I can honestly say that you couldn't tell anything had happened to him. He was energetic and totally sounded great. I was a little sad that his set-list was so short but that's how it goes whenever it's a three band show. He did hint that we'd see him soon, hmmm could that mean a Gavin solo tour? Gahhh, I hope so! But for real, it was awesome to see him in such a great mood and looking and sounding spectacular.
