Idina Menzel fulfilled a life-long dream of hers Saturday night when she played to a crowd of her adoring fans at L.A.'s Greek Theatre. We were there and have the scoop Idina Menzel fulfilled a life-long dream of hers Saturday night when she played to a crowd of her adoring fans at L.A.'s Greek Theatre.
"So this is what it looks like from on stage at the Greek," she said after coming out on stage in a flowing pink gown, long strands of diamonds and bare feet. "I told my makeup artist to give me that J.Lo glow... I see it Sergio."
Between singing songs from her album and from 'Wicked' (including 'For Good,' 'I'm Not That Girl' and 'Defying Gravity') and 'Rent' ('No Day But Today'), she entertained the audience with stories about Beyonce and her role as Shelby Corcoran on Glee.
"I've been so, so incredibly lucky to have been in this show called Glee," she said to loud cheers from Gleeks in the audience. "And this is a song I got to do on it."
A few lines into 'Poker Face,' she interrupted the music to tell the story behind doing the song. She said she had just given birth to her son, Walker Nathaniel Diggs, two months before she got the call to do the show. She was already feeling "fat" and down about herself and then she was pitched a role that would require her to play mother to a 25-year-old Lea Michele.
"It wasn't the best day of my life right there," she said joking.
Aside from casting questions, when she got the script and learned one of the scenes was a "mother/daughter reunion type thing" singing 'Poker Face' by Lady Gaga, it confused her even more.
"There's a part about baked goods," she said. "I didn't know how it pertained."
She proceeded to sing the song, making sure to highlight the aforementioned baked goods reference in the song, 'I won't tell you that I love you, kiss or hug you, cause I'm bluffin' with my muffin,' and her favorite line, 'I'm not lying, I'm just stunnin' with my love glue-gunning,' after which she mouthed the phrase, WTF?
"I think Ryan Murphy is here tonight and I"m going to get fired," she said afterward.
She also told a hilarious story of when she performed at the Kennedy Center Honors event for Barbra Streisand, where she was asked to sing 'Don't Rain On My Parade,' when she really wanted to sing, 'The Way We Were,' which was given to Beyonce, who was slated to emerge from a hole in the stage directly following her.
"I got a standing ovation, Colin Powell was there, he saluted me, I run off the stage, I high five Beyonce, she comes up through the hole, so it was good," she said. "Now we get the reception afterwards which was in a room behind the theater. My husband and I were seated at Ms. Streisand's table, who proceeded not to talk to me for the next hour and a half. So we started doing tequila shots to pass the time. Finally, she looks across the table at me, takes her glasses down and says, 'Did you sing for me tonight, I wasn't wearing my glasses' and I said, 'Yes, Ms. Streisand, that was me.' And she said, 'You were good' and then she left. Is that a good or bad review?"
After seeing Idina live in concert, we can say with certainty... it was a good review, Idina.
