One of the most high anticipated events is of course gymnastics and the Women's team is one of the strongest we've ever had representing us. You'll be hearing a lot about these fab five girls in the weeks to come and we'll be introducing them to all of you one by one.
First up--16-year-old Gabrielle Douglas! Here are five things you need to know about this all-star athlete!
1. Natural Talent
Gabby's been tumbling since she was three-years-old when her sister taught her to do a perfect cartwheel. By the time Gabby was four, she could do that same cartwheel--with one hand!
2. She's Got Double the Families
Gabrielle grew up in Virginia Beach but in order to train with Liang Chow, one of the most renowned gymnastic coaches, she had to move to West Des Moines, Iowa when she was 14. She lived with a host family and became a big sister to their four girls--one of which trained with Chow too.
3. Already Struck Gold
This is Gabrielle's first time in the Olympics but she's already a gold medal winner. She was part of the team that went to the 2011 World Championship in Tokyo that won gold. And she has three gold medals for the uneven bars earned at various championships including the VISA Championships in June!
4. Role Model
The official "Team Gabby" t-shirts for the Olympics say this inspiring quote on the back, "Gymnasts Dream Beyond the Stars." Email firstname.lastname@example.org to get yours.
5. What's in a Name?
Gabrielle has FIVE nicknames that different people in her life call her. They are:
BRIE - For Family
FLYING SQUIRREL - For Martha Karolyi (Team Coordinator for USA Gymnastics)
DOUGIE - For Fans
BRIECHEESE - Given by her older sister Joy
GABBY - For everybody else
What do you think of Gabby? Who else are you cheering on?
