We take a look at how sex tapes have affected the careers of various celebrities, including Paris Hilton, Kim Kardashian, Hulk Hogan and more.
There is no doubt about it, Farrah Abraham successfully managed to get her name back in the headlines with her recent sex tape scandal.
But, when the dust settles, will it help or hurt her career?
We know that Farrah received almost $1 million to sell the tape, so right now she probably feels like it was a super smart business move because the risk technically did pay off.
Farrah does have some celebrity predecessors who have enjoyed somewhat significant bumps in their celeb status after releasing a sex tape.
Of course, there is Kim Kardashian, who owes much of her career and notoriety to her 2007 sex tape release.
There is also Pamela Anderson, the pioneer of celebrity sex tapes, who was in a bit of a post-Baywatch career lull when her sex tape was released. After that, Pamela went back to being a household name and has held on strong to her renewed high-profile celeb status.
And we can't forget Paris Hilton who, prior to her sex tape, was just another socialite until her sex tape leaked in 2004 and caused her to become one of the most sought-after celebs in Hollywood.
On the flip side, there are many celebrities who have either released or had sex tapes leak, with their public over-exposure producing little to no results.
Let's first take a look at former Saved By the Bell star Dustin Diamond (aka Screech). After he authorized the release of his sex tape in 2006, it barely even registered on anyone's radar, and the interest level of the public was indifferent at best.
Not only did the tape fail to make him relevant again, it also pretty much ruined the former teen star's clean-cut reputation.
Then, there was Hulk Hogan. When his sex tape was released in early 2012, the public collectively cringed and the Hulkster didn't enjoy any increased interest whatsoever in either himself or his career.
Then, there is R.Kelly whose 2002 sex tape completely ruined his reputation. The tape, which allegedly featured the singer engaging in taboo sexual practices with an underage girl, actually landed him in court and actually turned public opinion against him.
So, it seems that high-profile sex tapes don't guarantee A-list celebrity status, but they don't necessarily destroy careers, either.
Also worth noting: The females have fared much better than the males, so the deck IS stacked in Farrah's favor on that front.
How do you think Farrah's sex tape will impact her career?
