"We've always seen this big jockey character [as the male lead]," said Jamie Campbell Bower, "and I saw this as an opportunity to turn a character that could be portrayed like that into a bit of a rock star." Lily Collins said she was a fan before landing the role as Clary. "She stood out to me in a different way than other female characters you've seen in franchises like this. She's just a very normal girl thrown into these situations."
Jared Harris, who plays Hodge, said the moral ambiguity and conflict got him involved. "Personally he [Hodge] reminded me of teachers at school and that's what I connected to." Godfrey Gao said, "I've never really done any other roles like this before. Magnus is half-demon half-human and he's a very fun character to play."
It sounded like Kevin Zegers kept things light on set. "Anything involving Kevin was pretty difficult," shared Jamie, "he would always make funny voices!" Lily talked about a scene they filmed in the dark. "All you heard was Kevin doing accents and voices. Harold [the director] was like 'We got that shot!' and I'm like 'No we didn't! If you see my face I'm literally crying with laughter."
A franchise like Mortal Instruments is anticipated to be an enormous success like Harry Potter and Twilight, but is the cast ready? "We know each other well enough that there's a certain level of accountability between us," said Kevin. "We're fortunate that we have personal relationships so we can say 'Wow, this is a bit more heavy than I thought it was going to be.'"
