Jasmine van den Bogaerde, better known by her stage name Birdy, gave us a call to chat about her new EP "Breathe" and sophomore album "Fire Within"! Check out the 5 things you need to know about her. More young talent from the UK!

Jasmine van den Bogaerde, better known by her stage name Birdy, is a 17-year-old musician from England. Her sophomore album Fire Within has already been released across the pond, but she's still gearing up for its U.S. debut early next year. We chatted with Birdy recently. Here are the 5 things we think you should know about her!

5: In 2008 she took first place in the first Open Mic UK--a live music competition. "I won when I was 12," she revealed. "And then I released 'Skinny Love,' which was the first cover I've really done. So it was all new to me."

4: She didn't imagine gaining worldwide recognition when she put her own spin on 'Skinny Love.' "For me, it was just a song I love and I'm a huge fan of Bon Iver," Birdy told us. "I never really tried doing covers before, I always wrote my own songs, so I didn't know what to expect from it."

3: She co-wrote her song "Words As Weapons" with One Republic's Ryan Tedder. "I'm a huge fan. I never tried co-writing before, so it was quite strange meeting someone for the first time and just writing a song with him," said Birdy. "It was really fun exploring and seeing his take on my ideas."

2: While she can't choose a single favorite off her new album, she did share one of them. "'No Angels'--it's quite stripped back," she said. "It's co-written by Ben Lovett from Mumford and Sons. It's one of my favorites just because it brings me back to the original piano cover version."

1: Fire Within may not be released in the U.S. until early 2014, but she has put out a new EP titled Breathe which includes her new single "Wings" and gives fans a taste of what's to come!
