On Sunday, October 13, 18-year old University of South Carolina student Martha Childress was struck by a stray bullet after leaving Hunter's concert in the city of Five Points.
Martha was reportedly waiting for a cab, after going out to eat following the country singer's show, when she was struck by the stray bullet.
Michael Juan Smith, a 20-year-old local, was the alleged shooter and intended to hit two men he was arguing with. The stray bullet hit Martha and was lodged in her spinal cord, causing damage to her liver and kidneys, and tragically, leaving her unable to walk.
Martha's doctors say she may never walk again, but from her Twitter account it seems like her spirits are up.
Hunter found a way to make his injured fan feel better too. He found out about her injury, thanks to a Twitter campaign started by her friends, and called Martha in her hospital room.
"Y'all @HunterHayes just called me!!" she tweeted.
"I seriously have the most amazing family, friends and support group that anyone could ask for."
Martha's shooter currently faces five charges, including assault and battery of a high and aggravated nature. Seventeen-year-old Ryan Ellison was also arrested and charged with disorderly conduct.
