The actresses-turned-fashion designers are dishing on why they put their acting careers on hold, going on to launch their now multi-million dollar fashion empire.
"I was reading scripts, and ultimately I just said to the people who were representing me, 'I need to do things 100 percent. I don't feel like I can give you 100 percent of my time," Ashley told Allure. "There's a lot of compromise in the entertainment industry."
Mary Kate, who has locked down appearances on Weeds and The Wackness in the past, agreed, adding, "I am not great at not being able to control the end product."
From the start of their first fashion line, The Row, the duo has gone on to become certified fashion moguls.
The actresses, who cover the mag's December issue on double covers, now have two other clothing lines, Elizabeth and James, and Olsenboye, and more than 60 employees working for their brands.
In spite of their success in the entertainment business though, the pair said making it in the fashion world didn't come easy.
"I think people looked at us with the perception of 'Oh, you just have everything. You can do whatever," Mary-Kate told the mag. "[Strangers assumed we] had enough money to just do nothing-or why would we go to college? And it's such an uneducated perspective! You still have to grow within business. You have to take a chance."
