It's been four years since his last album, but Jesse McCartney released his EP In Technicolor Part 1 today! Jesse gave us a call to talk about his new sound, the inspiration behind it and his next anticipated album.
"I took time off for a number of reasons," Jesse told us, "I did a few movies, did some television, but also I really wanted to work on my writing." He wanted to create a new sound for himself which "Ended up being sort of this throwback, retro '70s and '80s disco pop sound. It took some time to develop and lyrically I feel this album has a lot to bite into. I really wanted to take my time before putting anything out."
Jesse was first known for his pop sound when he came out with his debut album Beautiful Soul in 2004, but this album reflects his musical upbringing. "I grew up listening to the greats like Michael Jackson, Prince, Bee Gees, Earth, Wind & Fire," the 26-year-old said. "These are all artists that were definitely a big inspiration when putting this album together." He really dived into the old school sound, "When making this album, I really only listened to '60s, '70s and '80s radio. You can definitely hear the undertone [in the EP]."
With four songs on this EP previewing his next album, we can't wait for the full one next spring! "The full length album--I'm still thinking about what the actual title is going to be, I don't know yet," he said. But he does know that he'll be hitting the road. "That's one of the biggest part of releasing an album--the touring," he told us. "I promised fans I'll be going on tour again and I'm excited to play new material."
