After three seasons of lackluster ratings and a rotating cast of celebrity judges, the X Factor has been axed by Fox.

The US version of Simon Cowell's reality singing competition show, where One Direction was discovered in the original U.K. series, failed to see the same success in the States.

Demi Lovato's announced that she was leaving the judges' table after two seasons back in December to focus on music and her upcoming tour.

The show had a constantly changing panel of celebrity judges that included Britney Spears, Paula Abdul and Nicole Scherzinger.

As for Simon, he's set to return to the British version of the show, which he explained in a statement.

"Last year, for a number of reasons, I had to make a decision to return to the U.K. version of The X Factor in 2014. So for now, I'm back to the U.K. and I want to thank Fox for being an incredible partner and I also want to thank everybody who has supported my shows," he said.
