In the recently released teaser for the TV movie, Aaliyah: The Princess of R&B, Nickelodeon actress Alexandra Shipp transforms into the late singer, rocking Aaliyah's signature shades, a crop top, belted fatigues, a jean jacket and Timberlands.
After hitting a couple of body rolls with her stomach exposed, Alexandra smiles at the camera before the clip ends.
The starring role of the biopic originally went to Zendaya, but she soon pulled out of the role in June after receiving a ton of criticism from Aaliyah fans that she wasn't right for the role.
The former Shake It Up! star later said she didn't leave the film because of that pressure, but rather because of the quality of the film. "Let me just explain something, the reason why I chose not to do the Aaliyah movie had nothing to do with the haters or people telling me that I couldn't do it, I wasn't talented enough, or I wasn't black enough," she said in a set of Instagram videos.
"The main reasons were the production value wasn't there, there were complications with the music rights, and I just felt like it wasn't being handled delicately considering the situation... Therefore, I felt not really morally okay with moving forward with the project."
The film is based on Christopher Farley's book Aaliyah: More Than a Woman, which depicts Aaliyah's life story. It is set to premiere Nov. 15 at 8 p.m.
