Stepping away from its traditional princess characters, the company seems to be embracing heroines that kick major butt as of late.
Moana tells the story of an ocean adventurer by the same name who sets out on a voyage to a find a mysterious island in the ancient world of Oceania, according to CNN. The "born navigator" takes the trip with Maui, a demigod, and they embark on an "action-packed voyage, encountering enormous sea creatures, breathtaking underworlds and ancient folklore."
Co-director John Musker told the Los Angeles Times, Disney fans will see a character in Moana who is "indomitable, passionate and a dreamer with a unique connection to the ocean itself."
"She's the kind of character we all root for, and we can't wait to introduce her to audiences," he continued. The CG-animated adventure will be set in the South Pacific and is scheduled to be released in 2016.
