Ansel Elgort: I Asked to Be Shailene Woodley's Sub Kisser in 'Insurgent'
Joking with reporters at the Insurgent junket Friday in Beverly Hills, Calif., the actor said he told Theo James (who plays Shailene's boyfriend in the film) that he would happily sub in during any kissing scene if he wasn't feeling up to it.
"Yeah, I asked Theo if it was all right," Ansel said. "He said he wasn't feeling well and I was like 'listen man. I've done it before. I can step in.' Guys who do the visual effects are good in this movie, and they could've easily changed our bodies."
All jokes aside, Ansel said it was "definitely really weird" to go from playing Shailene's brother in Divergent to her boyfriend in Fault in Our Stars and back to her brother in Insurgent. "I don't know how we did it, but we somehow pulled it off," he continued. "We're happy that somehow it worked."
Ansel plays Caleb in the film, who doesn't exactly match up when it comes to Tris (Shailene) and Four (Theo)'s athleticism, fighting skills and overall strength. When he was asked if playing somewhat of a wimp made him feel like he was missing out on the fun of the action scenes, Ansel said, "I think it's really cool that Caleb is not bada**.
"He wasn't Dauntless," Ansel continued. "It was definitely a conscious choice of mine to make sure Caleb wasn't [strong]. I'm a physical guy – I like rock climbing and basketball and things, but Caleb definitely isn't that. So, in the film, even the way Caleb runs – he looks like he doesn't belong. It looks like he's going to trip over any second, because [fighting has] never been something he did. I wanted to make a conscious decision with that, because not everyone is a superhero. Not everyone is an action hero. I think Caleb represents the intellectual."
