Can cookies be a tool for social change? Of course - just ask the students at Jordan High School in Sandy, Utah. According to Buzzfeed, members of Jordan High School's Young Democrats Club decided to highlight a very important issue through the use of every high school's favorite fundraiser, the bake sale. The students at the bake sale sold the same cookies, but the price for the cookie would change depending on who was buying it. If it was a girl, the cookie would be sold for 77 cents. A guy? A whole dollar. The reason? To highlight the wage gap between the genders.

While I'm sure the boys weren't thrilled to have to search for another quarter to pay for their cookie, this is kind of a genius move on the Young Democrats' end. One of the most important ways to bring about change is to bring awareness to the issue at hand, which is exactly what the student group did. Though the gender wage gap has been hotly contested over the years - specifically the reasons for the gap and whether the 77 cents to the dollar statistic is truly accurate - it remains a major political issue, so much so that President Barack Obama discussed the gap in his State of the Union address in 2014. According to Buzzfeed, students at Jordan High School were eager to talk to the group hosting the bake sale about the gender gap, and getting people talking is half the battle.

Change can only occur when people know the issues that are at stake, which is why statements like this bake sale are so important. This sale may have sparked debate amongst students, but I hope that, ultimately, it makes the students think critically about social injustice and how to bring attention to the issues that are important to them. Luckily for Jordan High School, that might mean a whole lot more bake sales - and who can complain about that?
