Yeah, maybe "betrayed" is a little harsh, but fans are genuinely surprised that he would be recording a new album right after leaving the band. And it looks like he could have a solo album out next year, on Simon Cowell's label.
A source told Now magazine that Zayn has "been writing for a while now" and his new sound will be "very slowed down R&B and quite sexual. It's going to blow fans' minds." We're guessing he'll be branching out and leaving his One Direction boyband sound in the dust, if this source is to be believed.
According to The Sun (via The Mail), Zayn isn't distancing himself from Simon since he broke from 1D, with an Billboard reporting: "Simon was very understanding about him leaving the band but quickly made it clear he would stay a Syco artist for his future projects."
Meanwhile, the remaining members of One Direction have to carry on as a four-piece, with Billboard noting: "A 'leaving member clause' in the band's deal allows the act to continue as a foursome, and it also offers the label the option to pick up Malik's contract as a solo artist. The remaining 1D four-piece still owes two more albums to Sony as part of a three-album renewal inked in 2013."
A source also told The Sun (via MTV UK) that "Zayn is now the most in-demand solo artist in the world," adding, "There's huge excitement as he's the first member who will be able to release on their own."
What do you think of Zayn's move straight away to a solo career? Do you think he should let the dust settle first? And let's consider these tweets from November 2014 that have some fans feeling...yep, betrayed.
