Avril Lavigne wasn't exactly able to roll into her 30s with a bang.
While celebrating her 30th birthday in Las Vegas with a couple of girlfriends last October, she couldn't shake how lightheaded and lethargic she felt for months. "I could barely eat, and when we went to the pool, I had to leave and go lie in bed," she told People. "My friends asked, 'What's wrong?' I didn't know."
Before her trip, the rocker had been to doctors to try to figure out what was going on, but no news had surfaced just yet. Shortly after it though, Avril was told she had a severe case of Lyme disease.
"I had no idea a bug bite could do this," the "Hello Kitty" singer continued, adding that she thought she had been bitten by a tick last spring. "I was bedridden for five months. I felt like I couldn't breathe, I couldn't talk and I couldn't move. I thought I was dying."
Avril's mom moved in to take care of her, and her hubby, Chad Kroeger, also helped during breaks from his tour with Nickelback. "There were definitely times I couldn't shower for a full week because I could barely stand," she said. "It felt like having all your life sucked out of you."
Now, the songstress says she's "80 percent better," and is thankful for her fans' support while she was feeling so ill. "The get-well messages and videos they sent touched me so deeply," she said. "This was a wake-up call. I really just want to enjoy life from here on out."
