College Student's Self-Portraits Are a Lesson in Self-Love and Independence

Syracuse University freshman LaNia Roberts motivates others through her uplifting, confidence-building speeches and snapchats, but her Instagram page is where you can find the 18-year-old in all of her artistic, independent woman glory, courtesy of her captivating self-portraits.

After enduring years of relentless teasing about her appearance in elementary and middle school, LaNia eventually reached a pivotal moment during her sophomore year in high school that led her to set two huge personal goals - to lose weight and to learn to love herself more. As a result, she lost 50 pounds and over time, worked extremely hard to unearth what she deemed the most beautiful, capable aspects of her personality that her self-loathing had completely masked. But through her determination and commitment to self-love, a creative form of self-expression emerged, paving the way for her authentic self to resurface, and with it her self-acceptance began to slowly blossom.

"When it comes to painting a self-portrait, I could turn those things that I didn't really love into something that was beautiful not only to me, but to others," LaNia said.

And beautiful they are. For LaNia to have such a solid sense of self as a teen is absolutely amazing and the fact that she is her own biggest support system is probably the most inspiring part about her story.

Check out some of LaNia's self-portraits below:

A self portrait that I did a long time ago called "Stressed Out". Love you guys! I wish I could post more...!!!
