If you're gunning for a raise, grabbing coffee with industry professionals or even meeting the parents, you might want to rethink the fitted frock you had in mind. According to a recent Harvard Business School study, dressing casually - à la tech exec hoodie and jeans - can make you seem more confident and credible to people around you.
The catch? You have to have the guts to wear the dressed-down wardrobe in a setting where such garb goes against the grain (aka wearing the sweats you slept in to a Sunday morning doughnut run won't charm anyone). And that's because it's the act itself of defying a societal norm that's impressive, the study says: "Engaging in behaviors that present the risk of losing status gives off the impression that someone has plenty of status to spare."
In other words, fake it 'til you make it. Sporting a low-key, denim button-down with dark skinnies and slip-on sneakers could give you an edge that puts you a cut above the rest. Ahead, we pick out five dressed-down looks to help you rock that casual CEO style.
