After canceling more shows due to his vocal cord hemorrhage, Sam Smith flew back to the states to see a specialist and was hoping for some good news. Unfortunately, the doctors have decided he needs surgery and to have three weeks of silence.

Sam announced the sad news on his Facebook, writing: "Dear all: I am very upset to announce I have been battling to get my vocal cords better the last 10 days but unfortunately they haven't recovered and I am going to need surgery. I'm so gutted to be missing all the shows and events I was meant to be playing at. The doctors say I will be back in 6-8 weeks and I cannot wait to sing for you all soon."

The "Lay Me Down" singer says his surgery is set for next week and he's already anxious. "I have my operation booked for next week, so getting really nervous," he added on Instagram. "But by doing this in 8 weeks time I'm gonna be able to sing like never before so it's worth it. I am so sorry to all. Dreading the next month though, I can't speak for THREE WEEKS after the op."

We know Sam must be upset to have to skip shows, but they can be rescheduled...his amazing voice, on the other hand, is irreplaceable, so we're glad he's taking the necessary steps to get better. We wish him the very best for a successful surgery and speedy recovery!
