Walking into the session room, we were greeted by the sweet smiles of VidCode founders Melissa, Allie and Leandra. Their welcoming was followed by the presentation of swag including stickers, a small tote and a pin. Us Cambio #BUILTBYGIRLS interns were ecstatic about receiving new stuff to add to our individual collections, but the session gave us so much more than just physical trinkets.Vidcode is an educational website with a unique approach on teaching computer science (CS). While most people imagine the field of CS to be very boring and functional, Vidcode sees it as the exact opposite. The effectiveness of the site comes from its focus on creative coding: making something expressive, not necessarily functional, with code.
Using Vidcode, users can create fun and artistic videos with the fundamentals of CS. By dragging and dropping different code snippets and seeing the effects on the video in real time, the creator gains a clearer understanding of how the code is working without getting bogged down by confusing syntax. The object-oriented interface simplifies the potentially intimidating syntax that can discourage novice coders.
Vidcode has multiple step-by-step tutorials ranging from beginning to advanced, each with a different focus and final product. You can use Vidcode's preloaded videos, upload your own content and even import from your Instagram to create a fun movie!
After chatting and learning about the wonderful world of Vidcode, we had a chance to make our own awesome videos with the Make a Stop Motion tutorial. We truly experienced the power of Vidcode when making our videos - there was no lack of laughter and amusement while filming and editing. Vidcode is an amazing website, not only to learn, but also to have creative fun with your friends. Just peep their mission statement:
"All kids deserve a chance to understand how to create with code. We connect computer science to teen girls' lives and hobbies, empowering a new generation of coders."
And, be sure to check out Vidcode in action! Here are the stop motion videos we created:
