Ever wonder what makes a baby's skin so soft?
It's a carbohydrate called hyaluronic acid (HA), and it naturally occurs in the human body to keep the skin ultra hydrated, looking firm, glowing and healthy. (Good-for-you carbs? We're listening.) We are born with a large quantity of it, which is why babies' skin is smooth AF, but production of HA decreases as you age. That's why we get wrinkles and dry skin as we get older.
Recently, we've noticed this miracle ingredient popping up in some of the groundbreaking beauty formulas that have landed on the market. HA is not a new discovery, but previous synthetic productions of the carb haven't been easily absorbed into the body through skincare products.
"It is quite rightly called nature's moisturizer," said Sonia Deasy, co-founder and chief executive officer of Pestle & Mortar, an Irish skincare company. "Continued use helps your skin fight dryness and visibly reduces the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles."
Recent developments in its production have created a formula of HA whose simple molecular weight can easily be absorbed into the skin. This makes it retain water in miracle proportions - think 1,000 times its own weight. If you're treating your skin with HA, you'll retain far more moisture from your water intake and externally applied moisturizers.
Ready to give this plumping potion a try? Pestle & Mortar's Pure Hyaluronic Serum ($69) is a great option: "It is essentially the purest form of hyaluronic acid with no added baggage of harsh chemicals, fragrance, parabens or propylene glycol," Sonia said. She suggests applying two drops evenly on a clean face, meaning that one bottle will last you a LONG time. "It also works well with your regular moisturizer or as a primer under your makeup."
You can also find HA in capsule form or in serums and moisturizers. Here's a short shopping guide to scope out your options.
