Elle Fanning plays a transgender teen named Ray who decides to transition from female to male in the upcoming movie About Ray. The 17-year-old actress, known for Maleficent and Super 8, among other films, stars opposite Naomi Watts and Susan Sarandon as Ray's mother and grandmother.

In the new trailer, Ray's single mother Maggie (Watts) must contact Ray's estranged biological father (Tate Donovan) to get his legal consent to allow Ray to transition.

The trailer has been met with mixed reviews on social media. Some Twitter users can't wait to see the new movie. However, others are questioning the casting of Fanning instead of a trans actor. About Ray, directed by Gaby Dellal, comes to theaters on Sept. 18. Watch the trailer that premiered on Vanity Fair below.
