Meet Raffi, the First Openly Trans White House Official
President Obama has made many other moves in the past to support the LGBT community. He has shown dissatisfaction with conversion therapy on youth, he has opted for the creation of a gender-neutral bathroom in the Eisenhower Executive Office building, and he called the Supreme Court decision to legalize same-sex marriage "a victory for America." The latter is the most recognized, although the three are seen as major in our young country's history.
In the short time she has spent in this position, Raffi has already been called an inspiration by both young and old members of the LGBT community, and it's not surprising to see why. Being a trans woman of color, Raffi serves as positive representation for trans youth of color and also highlights the downfall of the stereotypical "true American spirit," which is thought of as the cisgender, straight, white male. By holding this position, she is breaking down these barriers and showing other trans people that they embody the United States of America just as much as the next person.
