Your favorite Nickelodeon cartoon is getting a completely unexpected revamp, and as bizarre as it is it might be the best news you'll hear all week. According to Variety, Spongebob Squarepants is getting a Broadway musical adaptation - and no, this isn't a joke. Though you might not have expected to hear the words "Broadway musical" and "Spongebob Squarepants" in the same sentence, this play has actually been in the works for quite some time now - and Spongebob isn't your only favorite person involved.
The news may come completely out of left field for the former kids who grew up watching this chipper sea creature's many adventures, but plenty of cool people are already very involved in the project. Cyndi Lauper, John Legend and Steven Tyler are already on board to contribute original music to the Broadway show, and they're only a small group of musicians who will help make this musical a reality. Composer Tom Kitt is also working with a "contributing group of well-known musicians" that include Panic At The Disco and the Plain White T's.
So, yeah: some of your fave artists are officially breathing musical life into your fave cartoon. Try not to freak.
As for when you can see the show... it'll be a while. Previews will run at Chicago's Oriental Theater from June 7 to July 3 of 2016, which means that we're over a year away from seeing this musical in completion. As for those Broadway dates, that remains to be seen. That's too bad, because I think that Spongebob himself understands how I feel about this musical:
