Why is Justin Bieber crying? That's what a bunch of us were thinking Sunday night when the 2015 MTV Video Music Awards were happening, and the Biebs broke down after his performance.

While chatting with Jimmy Fallon on The Tonight Show Wednesday night, the Biebs explained why he started to cry after singing "What Do You Mean?" for the first time live. Was it because of Selena Gomez? Nah.

"It was just so overwhelming for me...everything, the performance," Justin told Jimmy. He explained to the show host that he was blown away by the positive response from the audience, especially given that the last time he appeared on an awards show, at Fashion Rocks in September 2014, he was booed.

"I worked so hard at the album. I've worked so hard at just becoming the man that I want to become and then stepping into situations you can't help but feel judged," Bieber said. "What was so special about the emotional moment, it was authentic and real. I was just wanting it so bad."

As for that troubled past of his? He blamed all of that on being surrounded by "knuckleheads." Watch Justin open up to Jimmy, below.
