The hair at New York Fashion Week can be a total wildcard. You just never know what you're going to get. Some looks are totally gorgeous and wearable, while others can be a little more...out there.

But the braids at J. Mendel's SS16 show were serious #HairGoals - hairstylist James Pecis created a loose, casual braid that you could rock at a wedding, homecoming or semiformal. The laid-back vibe means it could also totally work for a daytime look.

"Because it's spring and it's all these really flowy moving dresses, I felt like we'd lighten it up a little bit," James said. "It's so pretty, and we give a touch of that boyishness to it, which makes it cool."

1. Work in PHYTO Phytovolume Actif Volumizing Spray ($29, from root to ends.

2. Curl with a 1.5-inch curling iron and part hair slightly off to the left.

3. Apply PHYTO Phyto Professional Matte Texturizing Paste ($24, from root to ends.

4. Start braiding loosely from the crown down, adding hair as you go. Braid to the end, then secure with an elastic.

5. Roll braid up inside and pin. Secure with bobby pins.

6. Finish with PHYTO Phytolaque Soie Light Hold Hairspray ($19,

See, easy! If you can French braid, you're basically there. Now go make your squad jealous.
