Etsy has long been our go-to for adorable gifts and homemade stuff, but that might not be the case for much longer.
Online retail behemoth Amazon launched its own destination for arts and crafts yesterday called Handmade by Amazon. The goodies include all the usual suspects: jewelry, stationery, art and home accessories.
The shop launched with more than 80,000 products, and 60 of them are Prime eligible, Refinery29 reports. This gives Amazon a major boost over Etsy, whose individual shops each handle their own shipping and handling separately. Free, fast shipping at Etsy is a lot harder to come by. Amazon also applies its smart filtering tools, which includes an "artisan location" filter, if you want to narrow your search down to necklaces made in Uganda. Prices vary widely, but there's a lot to be found in the under $100 range (price is also filterable).
Handmade by Amazon doesn't stop the makers from peddling on other sites like Ebay or Etsy.
Artisans include Leah Duncan, a designer and illustrator who makes colorful, whimsical prints on paper and fabric; LilyEmme, a minimalist, eco-friendly jewelry designer; and Son of a Sailor, who transforms leather, wood and metal into modern jewelry and home goods.
Will you stay loyal to Etsy, or are you excited for the chance to pick up a handmade beaded bracelet with your bulk purchase of shaving cream?
