If you've ever had the misfortune to listen to an annoying bro who thinks he's an expert on topics like street harassment, birth control, or body image, then I'm sorry to say that you have been a victim of "mansplaining." Luckily there are some guys out there who want this condition eradicated just as much as you do: YouTuber Adam Levine-Peres just schooled his fellow guys on mansplaining and his is one video all dudes should watch ASAP.
It's a little ironic that a man is explaining mansplaining, but Adam's message isn't condescending at all: it's just straight-up real talk. His YouTube channel, ProjectBronx, discusses social issues surrounding race, gender, and class, and mansplaining was the perfect next topic on the agenda. Here's how he defines the term:
As Adam says in this video, mansplaining is a symptom of privilege: many men believe that they have the right to mansplain because their opinions are "so important" that the rest of the world needs to hear them. This is a result of "social conditioning," as most men are rewarded for this type of behavior. Men are encouraged to vocalize their opinions assertively, but the problem with mansplaining is that in doing so men silence other people - especially the people whom know a lot more about the topic at hand.
[Mansplaining is] a condition that affects many men who believe that it is our natural born right to talk over, interrupt and especially explain things to women on topics that affect women, are predominately about women and that they're probably experts on in the first place.
Even Adam admits that he's sometimes guilty of mansplaining, but he's "prescribing" a daily dose of checking his privilege in order to stop the condition from getting out of hand. Let's hope more guys out there do the same, because if I have a guy explain why the birth control pill is dangerous one more time, I'm going to flip a table.
