Now, Troian Bellisario, who plays Spencer on the show, is getting candid about the story behind them. "It's so funny because when we were talking about taking the characters five years forward, everyone wanted a really, really new look," she said. "I thought, actually, that I would not be affecting the character's look so much. I was like, 'I'm not going to dye my hair a color.' Lucy went lighter, Ashley went longer and Shay kind of stayed the same. For me, I wasn't going to dye my hair a crazy color, because Spencer wouldn't, but she's very classic, so I thought maybe bangs."
Those bangs caused a frenzy, with fans either loving it or hating it when they shared their thoughts on Twitter.
You can't just give Spencer Hastings terrible bangs like that, ABC Family.— laura wolf (@LauraInOKC) August 16, 2015
The last thing Spencer Hastings needed after her intense marijuana and adderall addiction was bangs— Dylan (@dmaher19) August 12, 2015
SPENCER HASTINGS LOOKS ABSOLUTELY ADORABLE WITH BANGS. IM SO EMO— joana (@damnposey) August 12, 2015
And Troian was surprised by the response. "It was the most controversial, weird thing," she continued. "I felt like when Keri Russell cut her hair on Felicity. Everybody was like, 'Eww, bangs!' 'Love the bangs!' 'Hate the bangs!' 'Why did you do this?' 'Are the bangs real?' I was like, 'Guys, they're bangs!' So it's really funny."
The PLL time jump pictures are amazing because Spencer has bangs. I am Spencer Hastings so this excites me.— joan (@joanofsnarkk) August 10, 2015
Still...she didn't say whether the bangs were real or not (which people were dying to know). Considering the way she's been wearing her hair lately (i.e. no bangs), she's either grown them out or faked us all out from the beginning.
For now, we'll just have to guess - and wait and see how long she keeps the bangs on the show when the next season of PLL debuts in January.
