There's nothing scarier than accidentally dropping your phone. All you can do in that moment is cross your fingers and pray that your phone screen didn't shatter into a million pieces, giving you the option between a hazardous touch screen situation or shelling out major bucks for a new phone. Fortunately, this problem could one day be a thing of the past: Apple just invented a system that could protect your iPhone screen from cracking, and it sounds straight out of science fiction.

Apple has just patented a system that could be life-changing for butter fingers prone to letting their iPhone slip at inopportune moments. The system is kind of complicated, but essentially involves motion-detecting sensors that will activate retractable bumpers when the phone is dropped. The idea is that these bumpers will absorb the impact of a fall, meaning your screen won't shatter when it hits the ground. But before you start imagining a future where you can chuck your iPhone to the ground without consequence, there's something you should know: this amazing feature may never see the light of day. Unfortunately, Apple has just patented the technology - the company may never take this crazy-cool idea to market. Darn.

Hopefully Apple will see how awesome this feature could be in future iPhones, but for now, maybe invest in a really, really good case if you're prone to dropping your precious phone.
