This year has definitely been a difficult one for the One Direction fandom. However, the thing that has kept us stayin' alive has been the fact that there is a new album on the horizon. I was able to listen to the album before the release, and I have to say this is 1D's best album yet.
One Direction has finally found their sound. They have been experimenting with old influences since Midnight Memories, but this album really does it the right way. With influences from The Beatles to Fleetwood Mac, Made in the AM is one that is relatable and gives off that feel-good vibe when listening to it. The group has matured more than many non-fans would expect, and everyone needs to give this album a chance.
Here is my track-by-track review:
This is the song that Harry Styles has been tweeting about for weeks. Can I just say, HOW DID HE TRICK US INTO BELIEVING THIS WAS A SLOW SONG?! This song is like "Clouds" 2.0 instrumentally. Anyone who lost someone can relate to these lyrics, but there is a positive spin on the song with the music. It is the perfect opener to the album because it just gives a small sneak peak to what is to come. Their harmonies in the chorus really make it.
- Hey angel, tell me do you ever cry when we waste away our lives?
- Oh I wish I could be more like you, do you wish you could be more like me?
"Drag Me Down"
This was probably the best choice as a first single because it is the most mainstream song on the album. It has beat drops, catchy lyrics and amazing vocals. We've all heard it, so I won't talk about this one anymore.
Best lyric: I got a river for a soul, and baby you're a boat. (1d sure does love the ocean...)
This is the second single from the album, and again, the most pop song on it. It was very clever to release this because it gained a lot of attention in the similarities to the Taylor Swift song "Style." It is catchy and very pop.
Best lyric: If you like having secret little rendezvous...
With the fourth song on the album, we finally get a slower song. This song reminds me of Coldplay in the way the notes are held. The lyrics are strong and the fast-paced backing instrumental on this slow song work very well. It is another catchy pop tune on the album, which is probably why it was released at the time of pre-order.
Best lyric: It's like I'm frozen, but the world still turns.
"End of the Day"
The chorus is the best part of this song. The lyrics talk about how at the end of the day, you can't help whom you love. You will make mistakes and your heart will be broken, but everything will be okay. It is very relatable. The melody completely changes between the verses and the chorus. It goes from a poetic verse to a hymn-like chorus. It is very cleverly produced in this sense.
Best lyric: All I know at the end of the day is you love who you love
"If I Could Fly"
This is easily the saddest song on the album. Apparently this is the song that made Liam cry. The piano goes perfectly with the heartbreaking lyrics. You just need to listen to this one, honestly. The boys put their emotions into the song with their vocals and harmonies.
Best lyric: For your eyes only, I show you my heart.
"Long Way Down"
This song sounds like it could be about how the boys have a long way down from this level fame they've gotten to. It also could be about a relationship. Lyrically, it is so ambiguous that you can take it any way you want. It is another slower song on the album. Plus, they channel the Boss himself, so being a Jersey girl, I cannot help but love this song.
Best lyric: We've sailed the ocean and drowned in the waves. Built a cathedral, but we never prayed.
This is the best song on the album. It is so different from anything 1D has done before. They channel a barbershop quartet in their "doo-wops" and grunts throughout the song. This song is well produced with the fast-paced and vintage sound.
Best lyric: Wanna pull an all-nighter and get into something we'll never forget?
If the Beatles wrote a song on the Willy Wonka soundtrack for One Direction to sing, you would get "Olivia." Can we just talk about the strings section? I love how they sing the chorus. I love the instrumentals. This song sounds like it is heavily influenced by the Beatles, and the strings were apparently recorded on Abbey Road! The bridge sounds exactly like "Pure Imagination" from Willy Wonka. I love the sound of this one, and I will probably listen to it on repeat.
Best lyric: The summertime, and butterflies, all belong to your creation.
"What A Feeling"
I got total Fleetwood Mac vibes listening to this one. That's all I have to say about this one because I just love Fleetwood.
Best lyric: What a feeling to be a king beside you now
"Love You Goodbye"
This song is about wanting to get with an ex again after breaking up just for closure. It's not really a memorable one in my opinion, but to each is his own. The best part is Louis's high note though.
Best lyric: One more taste of your lips just to bring me back
"I Wanna Write You a Song"
I want One Direction to write me a song after hearing this one. It's slow, sweet and cute. I could listen to this one when I'm feeling like I need to be loved by 1D. Also, I love how it sounds like a pen writing on a paper at the end of the song - very clever production there!
Best lyric: I wanna build you a boat, one that is strong as you are free (I'm only writing this one because 1D really loves the ocean....)
I love this one. It is about the fans, and it is the Toy Story song. I also love how Niall said they brought fans into the studio to record during this one. It is a clever production trick to use something like Toy Story and fans in the song to relay this relationship with the fans. I love this one.
Best lyric: We could be the greatest team that the world has ever seen.
Let's just say this song is like "Sex on Fire" by Kings of Leon, 1D edition. It's basically about friends with benefits or a one night stand. It can be considered "No Control" 2.0 with the vulgarity in it. I love when 1D actually sings about things relevant to their lives, so I kinda sorta love this song.
Best lyric: You can call me when you're lonely and you can't sleep, I'll be your temporary fix.
"Walking in the Wind"
This song sounds like it's about Zayn. I love how it is a slower song, and I love how their vocals sound a bit like they are making a wind noise. It is a cool and memorable song. Harry describes this one as being a Paul Simon-esque song.
Best lyric: Goodbyes are bittersweet, but it's not the end.
This is probably my least favorite song on the album. It's a pretty simple song about guys being like wolves preying on a girl. (A bit bloody offensive if you ask me - I hope you understand what video I'm referencing here or else this is REAL awkward.)
Best lyric: Your fire is burning deep in my soul.
Ahh, the album name finally makes sense. This song is a slower song, but it is the perfect ending to the album. I can listen to this one on repeat, too. I love how it gives off a bit of a nostalgic feeling. Niall describes this one is how after a night out, you remember the things you've done later in the night because "if you're not sober at 2 a.m., you are at 6 a.m."
- We're just swimming round in our glasses, and talking out of our a**es like we're all gonna make it.
- You and me grew up in the same part of town, got these scars on the same ground.
Overall, this album is the best because of the way 1D was able to take their personal influences and put them into the songs. It sounds like there wasn't even a fifth member in the band because of how well their vocals go together and how well produced the album is (sorry Zayn). I'm a bit sad that this is the last one for a while, but I'll be listening to it for the next few months on repeat.
